ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಧಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗುವ ಆಹಾರ ಬೆಳೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಭತ್ತ. ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಆಹಾರ ಭದ್ರತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕೃಷಿ ಆರ್ಥಿಕತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದು. ಭಾರತದ ಏಕದಳ ಧಾನ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭತ್ತಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲನೇ ಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಭತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವು ವಿಧಗಳಿದ್ದು, ಇದರ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಮಿಕ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನವಾದ ಅಕ್ಕಿ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಜೀವಾಳವಾಗಿದೆ.
